Yoga and Ayurveda are the two sides of the same coin. To be precise, these are two disciplines based on the spiritual principles of self-development having their roots in the Vedas that are the earliest sources of Indian philosophy. The yogic and ayurvedic way of living dominated the whole of the Vedic era as the sciences showed people the ideal path of leading the life with pride, pleasure, and delight. While Yoga has been a spiritual method of looking beyond the normal potential of a human being, Ayurveda marks the primary medicinal system people had for the treatment of almost all the disorders arising in the body. Both these sciences are interrelated in a number of ways. Liberation is the word used to define what these two spiritual arts ultimately lead to. The primary goal of the yogic science is to liberate the body from daily-life agonies, worldly hassles, and the sufferings of this imitated world. Ayurveda, on the other hand, believes in the withdrawal of disease-causing agents from the body and making the life free from the agonies of everyday problems.
Before we turn towards discussing the idea of healing according to Yoga and Ayurveda individually, it is important to understand what does healing actually means in the language of these spiritual sciences. Healing, in the literal term, is actually an act of getting back to being healthy and robust in the body, mind, and spirit. The condition can range from a headache to a stressful situation and from a chronic disease to a state of nervousness.
The Ayurvedic road to recovery
Ayurveda healing focuses on two things- balancing the mind, body, and spirit and following the natural and organic methods of livelihood. The healing science promotes the theories of holistic living to ensure that no aspect of the human life suffers due to the introduction of modern packaged and synthesized foods. In Ayurveda, it is believed that every person is composed of five elements- space air, fire, water, and earth. The definition of health, in the words of Ayurveda, is equilibrium among these constituents, categorized into doshas. Ancient Ayurvedic texts classify Doshas into three types- Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Vata denotes space and air, Pitta stands for fire and water, and Kapha signifies earth and water. A person’s fitness and chances of poor health are hugely related to the balance of the doshas.
Now, coming to the state of infirmity, there can be numerous reasons such as improper food, lack of physical exercise, badly timed living style, etc. Correction in these manners is considered the best way to be back on the track to complete health. Apart from these theoretical principles, Ayurveda also sponsors various therapies for almost all the diseases that a human body can have. Whether the disease is related to the body or is a mental disorder, Ayurvedic treatment of healing can do away with every one of these. Panchakarma is considered as the biggest gift by the Ayurvedic science to the human generation, for the five-fold therapy is based on the complete removal of unwanted toxins accumulated in the body. The detoxification leads not only to the physical upheaval of the body but also mental.
The Yogic way of healing
Unlike Ayurveda, Yoga is not a therapy-based science but a set of principles that lead to the overall health of the body, mind, and spirit. Yoga means the union of each and every element in the universe that leads to the ultimate goal of self-realization. Why self-consciousness? Because Yoga believes that it is extremely important to know the various aspects of one’s body-mind-spirit and become aware of the body’s potential in order to remain calm and balanced. The yogic perspective of healing is not merely rooted in the removal of diseases out of the body. According to Yoga, a person is not said to be wholly fit until it gains a state of complete mental, physical, social, and spiritual harmony.
- Physical Asanas: Yoga poses are of great use in case of multiple disorders such as a backache, diabetes, hypertension, etc. Although there is not a specific treatment, various asanas can help minimize the effects of various diseases.
- Mental Practices: Mindful Yoga mainly covers the practices of Meditation, Mantra Chanting, Yoga Nidra, etc. These exercises are practiced for peace and harmony in the mind, which is the control panel of the whole body.
